Hi ho hi ho it's off to Canada I go....
For those registered with FAS and that have been on JobSeekers Allowance for 3 Months, there are a few opportunities out there. A few based in Dundalk, Cork, Roscommon, Ennis & Dublin.
This Librarian post via FAS closes in 2 days time {5th Oct}, it's a job in Special Needs school in Sandymount, Dublin and is also associated with the Job Bridge Scheme, so applicants need to make sure they are applicable before they apply.
So far these are the only jobs, i've been able to locate online.
In other news, i've decided to give Ireland 6 months, and then it's off to Canada for me. I figure it gives me enough time to get myself a job in retail, save some money before the big move. There are jobs in Canada, esp in the library field, they aren't half as frequent as the jobs from the States.
The reason I've decided not to do the year long J1 visa, is purely on the fact that it is expensive. At least in Canada, whilst waiting for the perfect Library job, you can waitress tables to your hearts content.
I'm looking at two places, St. John's Newfoundland & Halifax, Nova Scotia. I'm quite drawn to St. John's, it's got that Irish connection, it seems a little bit crazy, and the prices of renting are quite low compared to Vancouver. Halifax seems more accessible and has 100 libraries. Again it has that Celtic thing going on, and it has a ton of lighthouses. {It's an ambition of mine to live and work in a working lighthouse}. Anywho I've bought a Rough Guide & a Lonely Planet, so it is happening. YAY!
Applications for Canadian working Visas open in January 2012. I figure March is when i'll get the actually green light, then it's off I go. Hopefully to a new life and employment.

I'm so torn between the US and Canadian visas! I really want to the US one, because it's so much harder to get into and therefore this 1 yr visa may be the only real opportunity to do it, but am worried about the expense as well. USIT keep trying to sell it as an aleternative to the internship visa and yet then in the small print say "you have to work in a job related to your field and your employer has to constantly train you" so that it's exactly the same as the internship visa, grr!
ReplyDeleteI love the security Canada offers by allowing us to do retail (the only thing i really KNOW) while we look for library jobs. so yeah, it's a toughie. I don't know much about St.John's but have a few friends from Hali and it sounds gorgeous!
k, i'ma stop clogging your blog -haha i feel like yer wan from flight of the conchords, I'm like your blog's biggest fangirl!
Oooh any information Halifax send it this way!
ReplyDeleteThe thing with J1 is, you have 12 months FROM your Graduation date. And apparently we don't graduate until Sept. 2012, therefore we have until Sept 2013 to avail of the J1, which is pretty savage. That is if the graduation date stays the same. But still ample time to save {23 months!} should you want to avail of it.
And you're my only follower!!!! Sob!!!
